Do We Really Understand Astrology? A Necessity or a Choice?

Today’s Astrology – A Spiritual Reflection

Some thoughts from my journey in Jyotiṣa

A humble note:
This article is not intended to criticise, blame, or hurt any individual, astrologer, or profession. These are merely my personal reflections born out of years of observation, learning, and experience. They may be right, they may be wrong—but I offer them with sincerity and humility. I leave the final judgement to the wisdom of the readers.

Today’s Astrology!!!

In today's world, our greatest concern often revolves around physical comfort, security, wealth, and survival. Very few pause to ask deeper questions about life, Dharma, Karma, or spiritual evolution.

Perhaps this is one reason why many, especially the younger generation, perceive Astrology as a pseudoscience. This perception has not arisen overnight. It has gradually developed through centuries due to misunderstanding, misuse, unrealistic expectations, commercialisation, immature remedial practices, endless material desires, and, above all, a diminishing connection with Dharma and spirituality.

Jyotiṣa, which was originally regarded as the "Eye of the Vedas" (वेदचक्षुः), has unfortunately acquired many different interpretations today.

These are a few thoughts that often arise in my mind.

PART – 1

Our Expectations as Followers of Astrology

Before questioning Astrology, perhaps we should first question ourselves.

(a)

Many of us unknowingly walk on a road opposite to the destination we wish to reach, and later wonder why the planets appear unfavourable.

Free will plays a far greater role than we often acknowledge.

If we continue unhealthy habits, we cannot reasonably expect perfect health.

If we neglect discipline, we cannot expect a peaceful mind.

Nature follows laws.

(b)

Some expect an astrologer to be a master of every possible discipline—Jyotiṣa, Tantra, Mantra, Veda, Vāstu, Gemology, Palmistry, healing sciences, rituals, psychology, counselling, and much more.

Every field deserves years of sincere study. True mastery demands humility.

(c)

Some believe there is a remedy for every problem.

Yet our scriptures speak of different kinds of Karma:

• Dṛḍha Karma (fixed)

• Dṛḍhādṛḍha Karma (partially alterable)

• Adṛḍha Karma (modifiable)

Understanding this distinction is essential before discussing remedies.

(d)

Our difficulties arise from our own actions.

Yet instead of transforming our actions, we search only for remedies to transform the results.

The eternal law remains: "As you sow, so shall you reap."

Prevention is always superior to correction.

(e)

Often we desire fruits without nurturing the tree.

Actions produce results.

Without right actions, right results remain only expectations.

(f)

Many hope for immediate miracles through remedial measures.

Nature, however, unfolds in its own sacred timing.

(g)

Daily discipline, prayer, meditation, charity, Yoga, self-study and righteous living require commitment.

Unfortunately, many of us invest all our energy in acquiring wealth, while expecting our accumulated karmic burdens to disappear effortlessly.

(h)

Every individual views Astrology through the window of personal experiences, family traditions, social media, books, magazines, friends, or popular opinion.

Consequently, everyone forms a different definition of Astrology.

(i)

Some approach Astrology only after every worldly effort appears unsuccessful.

Sometimes this becomes the beginning of genuine spiritual enquiry.

(j)

There are also those who secretly wish to hear that all their suffering is caused by "Black Magic" or external forces.

It becomes emotionally comforting because it shifts responsibility away from one's own Karma.

Yet Dharma gently reminds us that self-introspection is often a greater remedy than blame.

The list could continue endlessly...

PART – 2

When Ego Replaces Wisdom

(As in every profession, there are sincere people and there are also those who misuse knowledge. Astrology is no exception.)

Whenever ego enters a sacred science, the science itself suffers.

Sometimes we encounter claims such as:

• "I alone can connect you to God."

• "Only I possess complete knowledge."

• "I alone can change your destiny."

• "Every planetary affliction can be removed instantly."

• "Every failure is due to Black Magic."

• "Every question has an immediate answer."

• "Every Karma can be erased."

• "Every ritual guarantees miraculous results."

Such promises may comfort the mind for a while.

But Dharma teaches us that even Divine Grace operates through Cosmic Law.

No individual stands above that law.

Real wisdom inspires humility—not exaggeration.

PART – 3

Beyond Astrology

Ultimately, Astrology points us toward something much higher than predictions.

(a)

Karma remains the only factor determining the fruits we experience.

Jyotiṣa does not create Karma.

It merely indicates which karmic fruits are ripening at a particular time.

Time is the language through which Karma unfolds.

(b)

Certain karmic results are fixed.

They become opportunities for purification, endurance, surrender and spiritual growth.

No one escapes them.

(c)

Some karmas are flexible.

Appropriate prayers, righteous living, charity, mantra, devotion, discipline and sincere remedial measures may reduce their intensity.

A wise and spiritually grounded astrologer understands this distinction.

(d)

There are countless positive transformations every individual can begin immediately without consulting anyone:

• Living according to Dharma

• Speaking truth

• Performing one's duties sincerely

• Charity

• Compassion

• Daily prayer

• Meditation

• Mantra Japa

• Sandhyāvandanam

• Service to parents

• Service to Guru

• Gratitude

• Self-discipline

These are perhaps the greatest remedies available to humanity.

(e)

There are indeed situations where guidance becomes necessary.

Finding the right guide is perhaps the greatest challenge today.

Knowledge alone is insufficient.

A compassionate heart and noble intention are equally important.

The Qualities of an Ideal Astrologer

Our traditional texts expect an astrologer to cultivate qualities such as:

• Guru Bhakti (devotion to one's Guru)

• Humility

• Righteous conduct

• Truthfulness

• Vedic learning

• Thorough understanding of Gaṇita, Saṁhitā and Horā

• Regular worship of Graha Devatās

• Rising during Brāhma Muhūrta

• Daily Sandhyāvandanam

• Nitya Mantra Japa

• Panchāṅga calculations and continual learning

• Purity of thought

• Compassion towards all beings

• Freedom from greed

The list is long.

Such individuals certainly exist even today.

They may simply be difficult to find.

When sincere effort meets Divine Grace, the right Guru or guide invariably appears at the right time.

A Final Reflection

The deeper we grow in spirituality, the less dependent we become on Astrology.

Astrology is a lamp. Spirituality is the sunrise.

A lamp is invaluable in darkness, but when the sun rises, everything becomes naturally illuminated.

May Astrology inspire us—not to become dependent upon predictions—but to become better human beings, to perform noble Karma, to walk the path of Dharma, and ultimately to move closer to the Divine.

You may not be able to rewrite your past, but through righteous actions performed today, you certainly participate in shaping your future.

सर्वं श्रीकृष्णार्पणमस्तु ॥ Sarvaṁ Śrī Kṛṣṇārpaṇam Astu.
