Who Truly Needs Astrology?

A Reflection Based on the Three Types of Adhikārīs

Indian scriptures classify human beings into three categories of Adhikārīs (spiritual aspirants) based on their level of spiritual evolution and preparedness to receive higher knowledge. They are:

• Uttama Adhikārī (the highest)

• Madhyama Adhikārī (the intermediate)

• Adhama Adhikārī (the lowest)

Understanding these three categories helps us answer an important question:

Who truly needs Astrology (Jyotiṣa)?

UTTAMA ADHIKĀRĪ – The Self-Realised

Siddhas, Yogis, Ṛṣis, Mahātmas and great Ācāryas belong to this category.

Their minds are constantly absorbed in Parabrahman, the Supreme Reality. They have transcended worldly attractions, pleasures, fears and disappointments. Their actions are no longer driven by personal desires but flow naturally in complete surrender to the Divine.

Having realised their true Self (Ātman), they have risen beyond the binding effects of Karma.

For such realised beings,

What purpose does Astrology serve?

They are no longer concerned about favourable or unfavourable planetary periods, because they abide in the One who governs even the planets.

ADHAMA ADHIKĀRĪ – Living Only for the Physical Self

This category includes those whose entire life revolves around worldly enjoyment, physical comfort and material success.

They believe only in what can be perceived through the five senses. Their identity is limited to the physical body, and their thoughts rarely extend beyond survival, possessions, pleasure or social status.

They neither seek Dharma nor enquire into the deeper purpose of life.

For such individuals,

What use is Astrology—or, for that matter, any Dharma Śāstra?

Without faith in Karma, Dharma or spiritual evolution, even the greatest wisdom remains merely information.

MADHYAMA ADHIKĀRĪ – The Spiritual Seeker

This is where most sincere seekers belong.

They have devotion to God and faith in Dharma, yet they continue to navigate the challenges of worldly life. They experience both joy and sorrow, success and failure, attachment and detachment. They are aware of Karma and sincerely aspire to purify themselves through righteous living.

They understand that the rituals, prayers, charity, self-discipline and expiatory practices prescribed in the Dharma Śāstras help reduce the burden of accumulated Karma and gradually elevate the mind.

Standing in the midst of Saṁsāra Sāgara—the vast ocean of worldly existence—they strive to move towards Self-realisation through:

• Dharma

• Bhakti

• Ahimsā

• Satya

• Selfless service

• Good Karma

• Vedic rituals and spiritual disciplines

For such seekers,

Jyotiṣa becomes an invaluable guide.

It does not create destiny.

It does not replace effort.

It does not override Karma.

Rather, it illuminates the karmic tendencies that are ripening, helping one live with greater awareness, humility and responsibility.

Jyotiṣa is not merely the science of predicting events—it is a sacred science that inspires inner transformation.

A Final Reflection

Astrology is not meant for everyone.

The Self-realised have already gone beyond it.

Those who reject Dharma have NO use for it.

But for the sincere spiritual seeker—the one who wishes to understand Karma, perform Dharma, and progress towards Self-realisation—Jyotiṣa is truly the "Eye of the Vedas" (वेदचक्षुः).

The purpose of Astrology is not to make us dependent on predictions.

Its highest purpose is to help us become independent through wisdom, righteous action, and surrender to the Divine.

The more we understand Karma, the more consciously we live.
The more consciously we live, the less we fear destiny.
The less we fear destiny, the closer we move towards Self-realisation.
